Chapter Nine

When she woke up, she felt like poetry- "love comes in at the eyes and wine at the mouth, that is all you need to know of truths before you grow old and die" - Yeats, she remembered out of the blue. Love and wine, what rubbish! Then she noticed it.

An envelope on her lover's pillow with the ominous words: Read Me Please. He left, she thought, and this is his good-bye note. She opened it with trembling hands, after calling his name.

A swatch of red caught her eye, and a handwritten letter tumbled out from the envelope to the floor. Hands still shaking violently, she bent down to pick up the folded note. Unsteadily, she forced her eyes to read it.

Dearest Ophelia,

I owe you more explanation than this letter permits. Perhaps someday you may even understand. But understanding now is less important than knowing. You have already guessed that I am gone. I have...

She stopped, clutching her breast, breathing deeply, and trying to regain her sense of balance and understanding of the world.
